That title above is true: five years ago is when the first HHID review was posted. It was for Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt, and it was fucking terrible (the review, not the album), but that write-up has somehow led me here, with a fanbase of approximately two people (and thousands of page hits a day) and a platform to both discuss hip hop and receive feedback on what else there is in the genre to look for.
So to those of you who visit the site on a regular basis to get your fix of smart-ass commentary, pop culture riffs, or just to see what album cover will pop up next, thanks. To those of you who actually leave comments on what you read, thereby proving that this isn't all for nothing, double thanks. And to those of you who actually use the Amazon links thrown around nearly every post to purchase your wares and help keep HHID going, I need you to send me your mailing addresses: there are some fruit baskets coming your way. (Note: please do not send me your mailing addresses.)
Since this social experiment exercise to freshen up my writing skills has, as of today, lasted exactly four years longer than I had originally thought it would, I need to take some time to reflect. Which means that I'll be taking a bit of a breather. Don't worry, I still plan on posting later this week; I'm just going to take a bit longer in doing so. In the meantime, please run through some of the other posts, maybe even some that you wouldn't have thought twice about otherwise (read: Fat Joe), as I'd like to think that the writing itself may be enough to keep you moderately entertained, even if the artist most certainly wouldn't.
Thanks,
Max
Happy B-day!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Max, for all those incredible reviews! Keep up the good work, and remember, more people are following your site than you can even think! ;)
ReplyDeleteI found this site about a year-and-a-half ago when I was searching for a Heltah Skeltah "Nocturnal" review, and I have been hooked ever since. I truly look forward to reading your album reviews. Keep doing your thing, Max.
ReplyDeleteIt's so good to have stumbled across your site, I enjoy reading your thoughts(though I only agree 80% of the time in total with your reviews)as well as contributing from time to time. Keep up the good work brotha!
ReplyDeletei always wondered what the very first post on HHID was. also max, you might have to cut that two reader shit out. don't you know i'm the third?!
ReplyDeleteBest blog on the internet, aside from Ghostface's blog...
ReplyDeleteThis blog has pretty much guided what I've been listening to since March, so yay! Completely adore your writing, by the way.
ReplyDeleteWell, congrats buddy. Now im gonna go read your review on Reasonable Doubt...
ReplyDeleteWell done mate. Massive respect.
ReplyDeleteI love this website. You're reviews are usually dead-on. K.I.M!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Max. Things done changed since 2007. My cd collection has grown to staggering proportions since 2007, so thanks for that. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteBlake
Max, your reviews are fun to read and spot on. This is probably my favorite music blog. Thanks for your hard work!
ReplyDeleteI stumbled across this blog whilst looking for a review of Inspectah Deck's Uncrontrolled Substance. I probably spend too much time on here when I should be working on homework. So, thanks for that.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Max! I actually stumbled upon this site looking for a Busta Rhymes review (for the curiosity factor) and what I found made me laugh my ass off. Been a fan/reader ever since and I even contributed some times. I truly believe that Max served three functions when he created this site; creating comedy, creating reviews of albums you should listen to and letting other people get their word in edgewise. Without this site, who knows what the world would be like.
ReplyDeleteSo congratulations on 5 years. Here's to 5 more!
Congrats Max.
ReplyDeleteI think you should start doing weekly posts, though.
Like...every Tuesday there's a new review. (Not a Reader Review, a new Max Review).
Then your fans know when to expect new content. Now it's pretty random - your die hards will check every day, but you run a risk of people wandering off and not coming back.
I don't know. Think about it. Weekly Max posts, random Reader Review posts, and once in a while, a Max stunt month. Then everyone's happy - your fans know when to expect new stuff, and you have plenty of time to cheat on your wife with Rihanna. (Your secret's safe with me.)
It isn't exactly random - I post every three days, save for this week, which I explained above. I like the overall idea, but I have a weird feeling that putting myself on a weekly schedule would actually produce less content, especially my own, which could also turn the readers away. I'll consider it, though.
DeleteYeah, man, it's your call. I didn't realize you were posting every three days.
DeleteYou could also post twice a week, and make one of the days a mini-post where you weigh in on new songs that are making the blog-rounds.
Happy fifth birthday to one of the best sites on the web, period. Happy birthday dear HHID, happy birthday to you! Aaaaaaannnnnndddddd many more...... (hopefully)!
ReplyDeleteI found this blog in 2008 through a guy that posted a link to your website and said that it was awful haha. But i didn't share his opinion and i've been reading your blog ever since....
ReplyDeleteI love you
ReplyDeleteI've only been listening to hip hop for about 3 years now so I've had a lot to catch up on. This site has always been my starting point when looking for something good I haven't heard before.I don't always agree with you but your reviews are always entertaining. Thanks
ReplyDeleteBeen reading since 2008. Always appreciated the thoughtful commentary and priceless sarcasm. Keep it up dude
ReplyDeleteCongrats! Found this site back in early 08 and have been checking in at least once week. Thanks for the time and effort. It's been very helpful for finding new and exciting music.
ReplyDeleteCame across this blog looking for a review of Cappadonna's "The Pillage". Even though I disagreed with that review (I think it's a dope album), I read everything that comes in and agree with most. Even if I don't agree, enjoy reading them. Also discovered a lot of new stuff. Now get some rest and when you're refreshed let's see that "Prince Among Thieves!"
ReplyDeleteYour reviews are usually dead on and i enjoy your humor. great site been hooked since 2 years ago deserves more fame! Mad real!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fantastic blog, and easily far better than your competition. Well done and good luck for the future.
ReplyDeleteAmazing site. Still waiting for a LEGENDARY WEAPONS review though.
ReplyDeleteI wrote about Legendary Weapons a long time ago.

That's what the sidebar is for.
Thanks for reading!
Well, Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeletefor the past three years ive been checking out hhid, keep up the good reviews
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, congratulations! Being an hip hop blogger myself for the past 9 years and having an average of 2 comments for each 10 posts, not to mention that from time to time we have to deal with haters, I gotta say lasting 5 years is a huge success. It's great to see that there's still great blogging out there. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog. Found a couple great albums I wouldn't have checked for had it not been for your blog. Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! Great blog and keep it up! You're doing a fantastic job.
ReplyDeleteHappy 5th to HHID and much props to Max and other folks who contribute content to this great site. You'll never hear any complaints from me Max in regards to your album selections (Take Care) and if I do, I don't comment on it because usually you acknowledge it and make it clear that certain things won't change (your need to cover all 159 Wu Tang affliates and their ashtray cleaners). Keep doing what you do. This is one of the few sites that I look forward to viewing on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteFrom the mysterious 3rd reader
Thanks for doing the blog. I've spent hours rummaging
ReplyDeletethrough the reviews.
People Under the Stairs & Prince Among Theives!!!!!!!111

ReplyDeleteLove this blog. The 90s is my favorite era in hip hop but I was to young back then to know all the music from back then so this site has been very helpful. Respect and congratulations from Berlin, Germany
