Diversionary Tactics: The "Damn, That Was A Long Month" Edition

Holy crap, I actually did it. Thirty-one posts in thirty-one days. I hope you two enjoyed it, and I even hope that I pissed some of you off, since that tends to make for some good commentary.

As you can imagine, I'm pretty damn tired at this point, and will be taking a few days off. But not before I leave you with a short message.

Hopefully the July blogs introduced some of you to some completely different music that you wouldn't have tried out otherwise. As is to be expected, I wasn't able to write about all of the albums that I wanted to present to you, since I couldn't find a lot of my CDs, but I managed to fill thirty-one days anyway, so I suppose I'll be okay. A lot of you left comments with some suggestions throughout the month: I want to thank you, and I'm sure a few of you were actually surprised to see your suggestions pop up a few days later on the blog (great minds think alike, I suppose).

If you missed out on a few of the daily posts,
click here, and you'll see all of the July drops in one nice package.

So, here's the audience participation portion. If this is something that you would like to see continue on Hip Hop Isn't Dead (the "stunt blogging", not the write-ups, since those will continue regardless, for better or for worse), leave some comments below, or hit me on my email in the sidebar. Let me know if this was something you looked forward to every day, and feel free to leave even more suggestions, since if this actually works out, I may need some help determining what to do next.

Stay tuned to the blog, as we get back to regularly scheduled programming.

Now I'm going to go take a fucking nap.

SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD RIGHT NOW (NON-HIP HOP):

And this shit is just funny as hell to me:

  4. Max,

I gotta give you props for the July write-ups. My routine for the month involved checking the site daily for the new review. I'd love to see this sort of thing - the "stunts" - continue. A couple possible suggestions for the future: reviews of international rap artists' albums; reviews of artists' demo material (like you did with the Clipse and EAF).

Also, looking forward to your Carter III review - still.

  5. I really enjoyed the daily write-ups, and (although it sounded kind of arrogant coming from yourself) I looked forward to it every day.

    I got one suggestion though:
I know it's against your principles, but I think a review of The Carter III would be very funny to me, and helpful for my younger brother who just bought the fucking thing.

I think I already know the answer, but asking doesn't hurt right?

Greetings from your two readers in the Netherlands!

  8. Well done Max, impressive effort!

I have to admit that I havn't read through every single one of your posts thoroughly but I've read the introduction text to most of the July albums. Since I live in Sweden your blog often updates around midnight and I've actuallly spent large amounts of my days thinking about what albums you might review.

The mixture between old / new, very well-know / less well-known albums was good too! Some days albums I consider classics were reviewed and other days albums I've never heard about.

However if I have to complain about something I have some disagreements with you considering certain songs and albums, and since I am one of the "kiddos" I get a bit tired when you're putting to much focus at the hip hop of the '80s ;-) .

    Perzy.

  13. Hey Max,
    That was a great mounth!
The first thing I did every day after work was to check your blog for the new review.
    Keep Em Coming!!

  14. Leave it up to M.O.P. to make Bert & Ernie seem hard.

Great job on the write-ups, it was an interesting read during study breaks for the bar exam.

Even if I wanted to throw my computer after reading the M.O.P. and Heltah Skeltah reviews(and comments).

  15. Definitely dug the daily updates!

  16. The daily updates were wonderful and much appreciated. I can't even muster the willpower to comment every day and you're churning out lengthy, well written reviews packed with information. One of your greatest strengths is that your intros always provide enough context to make the reviews interesting and the jokes funnier. This is what makes your reviews consistently enjoyable regardless of whether or not I care about the particular artist involved. In short, I would definitely like the stunt blogging to continue. I'm rooting for you to pull an Evil Knievel and start a stunt dynasty.

Since you asked for feedback, I'd like to make one suggestion for future reviews. In addition to listing the best tracks at the end of each review, perhaps you could select your favorite few bars from each album. I think it would be insightful and would probably generate more comments. Even a couple lines can be indicative of what kind of rapper you're dealing with in each review. Also, people would probably want to respond with their favorite rhymes from each album and it would give me an opportunity to chastise you for any lyrics that you might misquote.

Anyway, thank you for your heroic efforts throughout July and for all the work and wit you put into this site. Canibus might have invented the internet but you rule it.

  17. The daily updates were fantastic. And it was sweet when the De La review popped up the day after I requested it (even if it was due to coincidence).

Any reviews of these would be great:

    GZA - Grandmasters
    Eminem - Encore
    BDK - It's a Big Daddy Thing
    Deltron 3030
    Lupe Fiasco - The Cool
    Any BDP
Any more Slick Rick, De La, Tribe or Eric B. & Rakim

And for the most part, screw hip-hop not from of the Golden Era (late 80's to mid 90's). The less said about it, the better, unless it's to snark on the crap, or praise the few great releases. Rap noobs should listen to the classics instead of pining for thoughts on the mediocre.

  18. Well, Max, you mastered your promise you gave... That's so respectful!

From now on, I think you should keep going on as you did before July... Because I would like to be surprised by your reviews, and this is why I don't want to make any suggestions.

I can't realize how or by what criteria you decide which album is next for a review, but it's up to you, right?

Last notice: I would like to see more comments from you on comments left by your readers.

  19. *Clap Clap*

Well done! Fantastic reading all the way through. Picked up a lot of new favs along the way. Now review:

    Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030

    Especially since it's been re-released/re-pressed.

Also, anything else by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien.

You'll do it because you love having me as a reader.

  20. The Most Felonious Vocalist not only has the longest handle of any commenter, but leaves the longest comments too . . .

But I do think that's a good idea to pick a couple of lines from the album as an examplar of what the album is about.

Just think how much fun that would have been with the Tim Dog album alone.

P.S. Seems like it's time to retire the "my two readers" steez.
