Yeah, I'm Taking A Break Now

Well, it was bound to happen.  I've been on quite a tear since February, writing two posts a week, even with the new features that focused on specific songs that were a transparent ploy to not review albums.  But life's a motherfucker, and last Tuesday I finally blew a deadline, and thus ends the longest consecutive writing streak this blog has ever seen.

I had planned on taking a break anyway after the new year, because goddamn it, I deserve one, but now I think I'll need to push up the hiatus.  So as of right now, I'm taking a step back.  Hopefully, I'll come out of the other end of this sabbatical with new inspiration or something.

In the meantime, feel free to fill the comment section with another round of what you have on your current playlists.  That was a pretty popular feature, so I figured I'd recycle it pretty quickly, as I am one of those Natalie Portman-esque assholes that believes that the right song can change your life.  I'm not able to provide my own random selections just yet, but I'll pop up in the comments soon to add mine to the mix.

Enjoy the holiday season, and thanks for reading!

-Max

  3. All that picture implies is that you're nearly finished "finishing what you started"

    1. A picture of a guy slamming into a brick wall would have been too on-the-nose.

  4. You're of a stronger writing breed than I am then, Max. My brick wall came much sooner in my writing journey.

  5. Everybody needs a break at some point. Get some rest and come back whenever you feel like and enjoy the holidays! In the meantime i've checked out H.N.I.C pt2 yesterday which i was afraid of for a while. And i gotta say it's actually much less disappointing and almost throughout enjoyable. However the song "ABC" currently holds the title for not just being a terrible song but also having the absolute worst chorus i've ever heard which makes "Eat food, i'm full" sound like Shakespeares Hamlet in comparision.

Anyway, any tapes i absolutely have to check out until you are back? The last one that made me wild was L'Orange & Kool Keith's "Time Astonishing" but i'm not sure if i wanna listen to more Kool Keith right now because i'm sure none of his albums gonna sound any like this one.

From Kool Keith to Cellblock P in the same month ha...

  6. Kinda hoping I'll be able to beat mine and post the few reviews that've been rattling around in my head. What I'd hate to end up doing is biting Max's style though, and it's unfortunate that I'd even consider my unconscious mind as doing such but I have NEVER reviewed an album before.

  10. TPAB has lasted out the year pretty well, if it wins the grammy for best rap album then Kendricks place will be cemented

  11. Do whatever you want to do! But if you want feedback:

I prefer album reviews to mixtape / song posts. The fun of the blog for me is listening to an album and then reading your track-by-track review.

I prefer shorter write-ups to longer write-ups. The writing is good, I just feel like it could be more concise. The length can overwhelming sometimes; I skip past a lot of the biographies.

I would prefer more write-ups for new albums. 2015 has been one of the best years for hip hop in recent memory. To Pimp A Butterfly, Summertime '06, Tetsuo & Youth, Good AM, 90059, Darkest Before Dawn, CZARFACE 2, Sremm Life, etc. But none of that gets reviewed (except TPAB).

I would also prefer less reviews for obscure mediocre albums that few people have heard of and are obviously not worth listening to. (Looking in your direction, D-list Wu affiliate bullshit.) Just speaking personally, I don't read this blog to discover new music, I read it to see Max' opinion on albums I've heard. I guess if Max did a segment like "Underrated song / album of the week," specifically about a really good obscure album, I'd be down. But as it is, I don't need to read a Max review to know an average forgettable who? album is average and forgettable.

Just my opinion. You're great at the blog, though. Come back soon!

    2. Shit, I did miss that, will have to check that out. Re-reading my post it seems it might be too negative. I'm just nitpicking. Overall the blog is great, keep it up.

  12. review some rapsody or 9th wonder/talib's indie 500. Or Westsidegunn or Conway the Machine? And why did you never review any Skyzoo? there's a lot of good lyric and flow driven hip hop going on right now. Westsidegunn and Conway the Machine are basically singlehandedly bringing the grimy eastcoast gangstarap back from the 90's, and it sounds awesome. They some real ass gangstas too. Conway is rapping with a shell in his jaw and half his face paralyzed lol. and he's really talented. That would be more interesting than ^^^rae sremmord, vince staples, travis scott and whatever else is trending on the radio right now, all sounding the same. And what about Apollo Brown? That guy is a crazy phenomenon, a mix of Premier, 9th wonder and black milk. he released a great album this year. Also pusha t's album, obviously.

There's a lot of good stuff to review.

  13. This is just my honest opinion, I don't see you finishing what you've started. Your hiatuses, your mixtape/remix posts, your wu tang z-teamer posts, plus the amount of artists in the side-bar who some are making albums as you speak, I just dont see this finishing theme happening. I want you to prove me wrong, I really do.
